Moon

Fantasia begins this Thursday so you’d think I’d take a break from movies beforehand but nope, I went to see Moon today in a proper theatre and it was time well spent.

Sam Rockwell is on a station on the moon and… stuff happens.  To say anything else would be giving it away but I will say that he is pretty much the only character in this film and it works.  I went in knowing very little about this film and I recommend you do the same.  Don’t read anything about it, don’t watch a trailer.  Just go.  You don’t need to see it in a theatre, I think DVD or download would be adequate but I enjoyed seeing it on the big screen.

Even though it’s set in the future there’s almost a retro feel to this film, because while it isn’t slow it is calm and steady, kinda like Silent Running except, you know, good.  Well done to Sam Rockwell for totally selling it.  I had a few nitpicks but they mostly relate to the core concept so if you just take the plot on its own terms and suspend your disbelief then it works.  There are some fun sci-fi scenes and plot points but it’s mostly a cabin fever type deal, which is engrossing.  I wasn’t 100% engaged, my mind did wander a couple times but it only wandered to the point where I questioned what I would do in a similar situation.  It’s not like I was writing a grocery list or anything, so no, I wasn’t ever bored or disinterested.

I feel like I’ve already said too much so I’ll shut up now.

I finally got around to watching this… and it really was good. I love the mood and the fact that they just picked a few themes and explored them nicely, rather than try and shove in some cheap thrills.

The science was good, too. My only sci-nitpicks are: (1) “realtime” between Moon-Earth would actually have a 1.3 second delay (2.6 s roundtrip) due to the speed of light; (2) some of the exterior lights on the Moon’s surface were casting hazy beams, which makes no sense because there is no atmosphere to diffuse the light (there is moon dust, of course, but it would only be kicked-up around moving vehicles, not in places where everything is still).
